Gildan Continues Title Sponsorship of the New Mexico Bowl
Game to provide great visibility to the activewear company through 2016
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- ESPN and Gildan Activewear Inc. (GIL: TSX, NYSE) announced today an extension to the multi-year title sponsorship that began with the 2011 Gildan New Mexico Bowl. The entitlement of the Gildan New Mexico Bowl remains part of a collegiate agreement reached by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN, and Gildan, one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of T-shirts, fleece, sport shirts, underwear and socks. The ninth annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl will kick off at 12:20 p.m. MST (2:20 p.m. EST) on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at University Stadium in Albuquerque and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
“We are thrilled that our relationship with Gildan is continuing,” said Jeff Siembieda, Gildan New Mexico Bowl Executive Director. “Gildan has embraced our event, our State and our culture from the very beginning. Their passion, vision and friendship have been a huge piece in the growth of this event and I look forward to continuing to build on the success, with Gildan, in the years to come.”
Since Gildan’s sponsorship, the Albuquerque-based bowl game has produced some of the best and most exciting games of the U.S. college bowl seasons. In 2013, the Mountain West’s Colorado State Rams trailed by 22 points (35-13) before coming back to beat the Pac-12’s Washington State Cougars in a 48-45 thriller. The 2012 game ended with the Pac-12’s Arizona Wildcats scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes to come from behind for a shocking 49-48 victory.
“We began working with ESPN at the early stages of our strategy to position Gildan® as a consumer brand,” states Rob Packard, Vice-President, Marketing and Merchandising, Retail at Gildan. “The title sponsorship of the New Mexico Bowl and our participation in some of ESPN’s other innovative collegiate platforms have contributed to elevating the awareness and success of the Gildan® brand.”
In addition to the bowl game, over the years, Gildan has been active in the Albuquerque community, participating in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, launching a Green Chile Stew Cook-off, with cash prizes going to local schools, hosting bowl-week parties and other activities.
ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN, owns and operates a large portfolio of collegiate sporting events worldwide. The roster includes two Labor Day weekend college football games; 11 college bowl games and eight college basketball events, which accounts for approximately 200 hours of programming, reaches almost 64 million viewers and attracts over a half a million attendees each year. With satellite offices in Boca Raton, Boise, Birmingham, Dallas-Fort Worth, Albuquerque, St. Petersburg and Las Vegas, ESPN Events builds relationships with conferences, schools and local communities, as well as providing unique experiences for teams and fans.
