BOWL ANALYSIS: There are just four weeks left in the regular season and there are still 56 teams across the nation that could get eligible to play in one of the 40 bowl games. There are 50 programs already eligible and 22 that have been eliminated. One of our partner conferences, Conference USA, has four eligible teams, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Southern Mississippi and WKU, and five fighting for postseason action. On the flip side, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas and UTSA are out of the running. The Mountain West has two eligible teams in Boise State and Air Force, and seven still in the hunt for a bowl. Fresno State, Hawaii and Wyoming have been eliminated. Below is a chart detailing both leagues teams whose fate is undecided and what is left on their schedule.
THIS WEEK’S GAMES TO WATCH FOR: Both the Mountain West and Conference USA have all games slated for Saturday in Week 11. Every MW team is in action and with wins, San Diego State, New Mexico and Nevada would become bowl eligible. The Aztecs, hosting Wyoming, have won seven straight against the MW, dating back to last season. The Wolfpack have won six straight against San Jose State and have not lost at home to the Spartans in 15 years. The Lobos have never beat Boise State and the Broncos have won 18 consecutive home games, which is the third longest streak inthe nation. It’s also a must-win situation for UNLV but the Rebels are just 4-8 in Fort Collins.
C-USA’s West Division could shake up this weekend as leader Louisiana Tech rests with a bye. Southern Miss could tie La Tech atop the West with a win at Rice but the Owls are 4-1 in the series with an 18-point win in last year’s meeting. UTEP, currently tied for 3rd in the West with Rice, could use the win as it travels to Old Dominion. Both teams are coming off upset wins last weekend and are vying for a postseason berth. RECAPPING WEEK 10: Many in the media dubbed week 10 “Separation Saturday” and it proved to be a very fitting description. Thursday night, the Mountain West’s Nevada moved to win closer to becoming bowl eligible with it;s 30-16 win over Fresno State. The loss eliminated the Bulldogs from the postseason. Friday night, Conference USA’s UTEP kept it’s postseason hopes alive with a 24-21 win over Rice. On Saturday, C-USA’s Florida Atlantic and Charlotte were officially ousted with losses while Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee stayed in the race with key victories. The MW’s Air Force became bowl eligible with a 20-3 triumph over Army that also kept them in the running for the Commander-In-Chief’s trophy.
