Week 7 News & Notes


The sixth week of the 2016 college football season is in the books and there are six teams eligible for a bowl game. The SEC has two perfect 6-0 teams in Texas A&M and Alabama. Also eligible are the Pac-12’s Washington, MAC’s Western Michigan, Big Ten’s Michigan and ACC’s Clemson. There are still 122 teams that could possibly get eligible as no one has been eliminated yet.

THIS WEEK’S GAMES TO WATCH FOR: The Mountain West Conference is in action Friday night as the Fresno State Bulldogs host the San Diego State Aztecs at 8 p.m. MT on CBS Sports Network. Fresno State, which is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, has won three of the last four in the series.

On Saturday, the league has four more conference games on tap, starting with New Mexico and Air Force playing in the Cotton Bowl at 1:30 p.m. MT and airing on ESPNews. Boise State and Hawai`i both look to improve to 3-0 in MW competition, hosting Colorado State (ESPN2 at 8:15 p.m.) and UNLV (10 p.m. MT on Oceanic PPV), respectively.

Conference USA has two nonconference and four conference games slated for Saturday. Louisiana Tech looks to be the second C-USA team to best Massachusetts in consecutive weeks while Southern Miss hunts for its second straight win in the series with No. 25 LSU. Middle Tennessee and Rice return from a bye week, hosting WKU and UTSA, respectively. For a complete schedule with series notes, see page 1 of the attached PDF.

For our partern conferences, the Mountain West’s Boise State could become eligible this weekend with a victory. Air Force, San Diego State and Wyoming are two wins shy. For Conference USA, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion and Southern Miss are two wins away from the six required for a bowl bid. Both leagues have commitments to six bowls, including the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
